What the PSLE asks about rate
A rate says how much of one thing goes with one of another, such as litres per minute or dollars per litre. At P6 one relationship does the work, total = rate x number of units, and the topic is learning to use it three ways round. In the PSLE Math paper it appears as short-answer questions and as structured problems in which two rates act at once, such as a tap filling a tank while a leak empties it, or in a best-buy comparison.
The most common way to lose marks is not in the multiplication, it is in choosing between multiplying and dividing. A pupil who has not identified which quantity is the rate will pick the wrong operation, and in a best-buy question will compare total prices when only the price for one kilogram can settle the matter.
Naming the rate first, rather than guessing the operation
The lesson begins by asking a pupil to say what the rate is and what it is per. Once that is written down, the three versions of the question differ only in which of the three quantities is missing, and the operation follows from that rather than from a hunch.
Two-rate problems are handled one rate at a time and then combined, and the best-buy questions finish by finding a price for one unit so that the two offers can finally be compared fairly.
